Product families

Some products must always carry the same price: flavours of the same drink, colours of the same garment, pack variants that shouldn't undercut each other. A product family makes that guarantee structural — every member of the family carries the same price within a location, across every price list, always.

Heads and members

Every family has one family head — the product whose price the family follows, marked with a crown in the grids. The other products are members, marked with a lock: they inherit their price from the head and cannot be priced independently. Price the head, and the whole family moves together.

When a family is created, Resolve elects the head automatically — the member with the highest revenue over the trailing twelve months. You can promote a different member to head at any time from the Product Hierarchy page.

What you can and can't do

  • Price the head — normally, with any rule type, by hand or by workflow. Members follow.
  • Edit a member's price — not allowed; the grid tells you the member is locked to its head. This is the point of a family: no member can drift.
  • Restructure — from the Product Hierarchy page you can make a different product the head, move products into or out of a family by drag-and-drop, and dissolve a family (members become independently priceable again). A family always has at least two products and lives at exactly one hierarchy node.

Families and automation

Pricing workflows price the family head, and family alignment keeps every member pinned to the head's resolved price — both during workflow runs and at publish. In the Review grid you'll see members' prices attributed to family alignment, so it's always clear a price came from the head rather than a rule of the member's own.

When to reach for a family

Use a family when identical pricing is a hard requirement, not merely current practice. If two products usually share a price but may diverge, price them with a shared hierarchy-level rule instead — inheritance gives you consistency without the lock.

That completes the concepts. Continue to Onboarding your data, or jump straight to Reviewing prices.
